The VW California is the first and only factory built, purpose built camper van by Volkswagen. Despite the Volkswagen brand being synonymous with camper vans, all previous incarnations were after market conversions - until now.

The VW California offers complete motoring comfort. It’s car like dimensions, means it fits in to multi story and supermarket car parks with ease and is a pleasure to drive on a daily basis around town or on long motoring trips. 2010 has seen the launch of the facelifted California in the UK, with it’s new range of 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder engines, available either as 140PS turbo or the 180PS Bi-turbo in manual, tiptronic or even as a ‘4-motion’ VW’s 4 wheel drive version. The pre 2010 California’s, come with a choice of two of volkswagens finest 5 cylinder TDI engines, the 130 PS or 174 PS variant, either with manual transmission or ‘tiptronic’. These were also available as a ‘4-motion’ four wheel drive version.

The VW California is extremely well equipped as standard. It includes a refrigerator box, two burner hob, sink with running water, two front ‘captains’ chairs which swivel 360, a sliding rear bench seat on rails, which is removable and folds down flat ‘rock and roll style’ to form a large double bed. There is an onboard computer system which controls various displays, the temperature of the refrigerator box, the temperature and timings for the auxiliary heating system, the water levels in the fresh water tank and waste water tanks, the battery levels and not least of all, the electric elevating roof. With the roof fully elevated there is full standing height within the van, or a further, surprisingly large, double sleeping area. The van is superbly designed, packed full of features and clever storage. There is a folding table in the van, and a removable table and chairs cleverly stowed in the boot lid and sliding side door.
